What this career looks like in India

Wedding planning in India is a vendor-orchestration business. A planner holds the client's budget, negotiates with venues, decorators, caterers, photographers and artistes, builds the run-sheet and takes responsibility for everything that happens on the day. Most planners start inside an existing firm for two to three seasons before setting up on their own; income moves from a salary to a percentage of wedding budgets.

How to get in

There is no licence or entrance exam. Employers look for a graduate degree in any stream, plus a diploma in event management or hospitality, and — above everything — documented weddings you have worked on. Internships during the October–February season are the usual entry route.

Skills that matter

Budgeting and cost control, vendor negotiation, design sense, logistics and run-sheet planning, client handling under pressure, and social-media portfolio building.
