How to read a career assessment report critically — and what no test can tell you

How should a family read a career assessment report?

Read it as a description of behaviour, not a prediction of destiny. A useful report tells you how a person tends to work, where their natural and adapted styles diverge, and which environments will cost them energy. It cannot tell you which job they should take, how much they will earn, or whether they will be happy.

What a good report contains

A behavioural report describes patterns: how the person handles detail, pace, people and pressure, and how their adapted style differs from their natural one under stress.

That gap is often the most useful part, because it shows where an environment is asking someone to work against their grain.

Claims that should make you sceptical

Be wary of any report that names one career as correct, predicts income, or presents a single score as an identity. Behavioural instruments describe tendencies; they do not determine outcomes.

RAPD, the instrument used in Dheya's process, is a behavioural assessment — not a personality test, aptitude test or IQ test — and its output is a starting point for a conversation.

Turning a report into a decision

Convert each pattern into a question about a real route: does this course's daily work ask for the thing this student does naturally, or the thing that drains them?

Then test two or three routes concretely in the Careers Atlas rather than accepting a recommended list at face value.

Each entry describes the education path, the skills that matter and the first role — not the brochure version.

Frequently asked questions

Can an assessment be wrong?
It can be misread, taken in an unrepresentative state, or over-interpreted. Treat it as one input, compare it against observed behaviour, and re-check anything that surprises the family.
How often should a student be reassessed?
Behavioural patterns are fairly stable; reassessment is mainly useful after a major change in context. More frequent testing usually reflects a hope that the answer will change.
Is a free online test useful?
As a conversation starter, sometimes. For a decision involving years and fees, ask who validated the instrument and who interprets the result with you.
What can no assessment tell you?
Whether a specific employer will suit you, how a market will move, or whether you will find the work meaningful. Those come from exposure and reflection.
Should the child read the full report?
Yes, with someone to interpret it. Reports read alone tend to be reduced to a label, which is the least useful part of the document.
