Overseas education spend: a decision checklist before you commit the money
What should a family check before committing to overseas education spending?
Check five things: the total cost including living and currency risk, the repayment path in numbers, the post-study work rules as they currently stand, the specific role the qualification leads to, and what happens if the student returns immediately after graduating. A plan that only works in the best case is not a plan.
Cost the whole thing, not the tuition
Tuition is the quoted number; living costs, travel, health cover, visa fees and currency movement are the rest. Build the figure for the full duration, not the first year.
Then write the repayment path: who repays, from what income, over how long, and what happens if the first job takes nine months.
Read the current rules yourself
Immigration and post-study work rules change. Read the official source for the intake year rather than an agent's summary or a forum post from a previous cohort.
Where an agent's fee depends on enrolment, treat their advice as sales material and verify independently.
Name the role, then work backwards
The plan needs a specific job title. From there, check whether employers in that field hire international graduates, and whether the programme has placements with them.
If the family cannot name the role, the decision is not ready — the money is being spent on optionality that may not exist.
Read the actual entry route in the Careers Atlas
Each entry describes the education path, the skills that matter and the first role — not the brochure version.

Frequently asked questions
- Is an education loan the right way to fund this?
- It can be, when the repayment path is written down and stress-tested against a delayed first job. Loans taken without that calculation are the most common source of later distress.
- How do we evaluate an education agent?
- Ask how they are paid, ask for outcomes from students two years out, and verify every claim about visas or work rights against the official source.
- Is a cheaper country a safer bet?
- Only if the work route and the employer market are real. Low tuition with no post-study route can be more expensive per unit of outcome than a costlier destination.
- What if the student wants to return to India?
- Plan for it explicitly. Recent Indian work experience and a local network matter on return, so a plan that includes an eventual re-entry role is stronger.
- Should siblings' education be considered?
- Yes. Committing the family's full capacity to one child's degree creates constraints for the next decision. Model both before signing.
