BBD Syndrome — Bored, Burnt-out, Disengaged

Why 67% of working Indians feel stuck — and what the data says about it.

BBD is Dheya's research-backed model of mid-career drift. Across a 2024–25 study of 12,000+ working professionals in India, 67% reported at least two of the three BBD markers. The model names the pattern so it can be addressed.

What it is

A quick read.

The dimensions

What we measure.

B

Bored

The work has become repetitive. Growth has flattened. The role no longer demands new learning.

B

Burnt-out

Sustained overload without recovery. Energy is being spent at a rate the role can't replenish.

D

Disengaged

The work is no longer meaningful. Effort and outcome have decoupled.

Why it matters

Most career change starts with a vague 'I'm not happy'. BBD turns that into three specific diagnoses — each with a different remedy. Boredom needs a stretch role. Burnout needs a recovery protocol. Disengagement needs a values reset.
