AI and the job market

Is B.Tech CSE still worth it in 2026? An evidence-based way to decide

Is a B.Tech in Computer Science still worth it in 2026?

For a student who enjoys building systems and debugging, yes — the degree still opens the widest set of technical routes in India. What has changed is that the degree alone no longer differentiates. The deciding factor is demonstrated work: projects, internships and depth in one area. For a student choosing CSE only for placement statistics, the risk is higher than it was.

What has changed and what has not

What has not changed: computing remains the base layer of most industries, and a CSE degree remains the most portable technical qualification in India.

What has changed: routine entry-level tasks are increasingly automated, and hiring for freshers now leans on demonstrated ability rather than on the degree as a filter. The student who ships something is in a different queue from the student who only has a transcript.

The fit test, before the market test

CSE suits students who tolerate long debugging loops and enjoy abstraction. It does not suit students who chose it because it was the highest-cutoff branch available.

A structured behavioural read tells you which of the two you are looking at before four years and a large fee are committed.

Compare three routes end to end

Do not compare branches by cutoff. Compare them by first role, daily work, and the skills that compound. CSE, an AI/ML specialisation and cybersecurity lead to visibly different working lives.

Read all three in the Careers Atlas before ranking preferences, and ask which daily work the student would still choose in year five.

Each entry describes the education path, the skills that matter and the first role — not the brochure version.

Frequently asked questions

Will AI reduce demand for software engineers?
It is changing the composition of the work more than the existence of it: less routine implementation, more system design, review and integration. The entry-level rung is the part under most pressure, which raises the value of demonstrated projects.
Is a non-CSE branch with good projects better than CSE without?
Often, for technical roles. Many employers hire on demonstrated ability. CSE gives a head start on curriculum and peer group; it does not substitute for a portfolio.
What should a CSE student build in the first two years?
One thing that real users touch, and depth in one area — systems, data, security or product engineering. Breadth without depth is the most common weak profile at graduation.
Is a tier-2 college CSE worth it?
It can be, if the student uses the four years to build externally visible work. The college affects the on-campus queue, not the ceiling for a student with shipped projects.
How do I choose between CSE and AI/ML at admission time?
Compare the actual course structures. Many AI/ML programmes are CSE with a specialisation in later years; the branch label matters less than the electives and the lab access.
