Dummy schools explained: the real cost to a student's record, skills and confidence

What does a family actually give up when a student enrols in a dummy school?

A dummy-school arrangement buys preparation hours by removing school attendance. What it removes with it is practicals, projects, teacher references, peer environment and the daily structure most teenagers rely on. The trade is rational only if the added hours are actually used well — and for many students, unsupervised hours are the ones that get lost.

What is actually being traded

The visible trade is attendance for study hours. The invisible trade is supervision, feedback, and the record that a school builds on a student's behalf.

For a self-directed student with a strong external structure, the added hours may convert. For a student who needs external pace-setting, removing school removes the only reliable pace-setter.

The record consequences

Practical marks, internal assessment, project work and teacher recommendations are produced by attendance. Programmes that ask for a portfolio or an interview — design, architecture, liberal arts, most overseas applications — read exactly those signals.

A student who narrows to a single entrance exam also narrows the set of routes still open if that exam does not go well.

If you go ahead anyway

Replace what the school was providing: a fixed daily schedule, weekly external review of work, at least one non-academic activity that continues, and one adult outside the coaching institute who reviews progress monthly.

Set a review point at the end of the first term. If the added hours have not produced measurable gains, the arrangement is costing more than it returns.

Is dummy-school enrolment legal?
Rules vary by board and state, and boards have periodically acted against attendance shortfalls. Check the current attendance and eligibility rules of your specific board before treating it as a settled option.
Does it improve entrance results?
It adds available hours. Whether results improve depends on whether the student converts unsupervised hours into practice, which varies widely between students.
What about students who need the flexibility for sport or performance?
That is a different case with a genuine reason and usually a structured alternative programme already in place. The concern is with attendance dropped purely to extend coaching hours.
Can a student rebuild the record later?
Partly. Skills and projects can be built later; school practicals, internal assessment and teacher references for that period cannot be recreated.
What is the safer middle path?
Stay enrolled and cut the coaching load to what the diagnosis actually requires — usually targeted practice on weak question types rather than a full parallel syllabus.
