The key difference
- A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS plus MD/DNB in Psychiatry) who can diagnose mental illness and prescribe medication.
- A psychologist studies behaviour and the mind, and uses assessment and talk-based therapies. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.
Training
- Psychiatrist: MBBS, then postgraduate psychiatry, regulated by the National Medical Commission.
- Clinical psychologist: psychology degrees followed by a clinical qualification recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India.

Who does what
- Severe conditions often need a psychiatrist's medical care.
- Therapy for anxiety, stress, relationships or behaviour change is commonly provided by psychologists.
- Many people benefit from both, with the two professionals coordinating care.
So who is the better healer?
Neither. They are different tools for different needs. The best care often uses both.
