What the merchant navy is
The merchant navy is commercial shipping: vessels carrying cargo and passengers worldwide. It is regulated in India by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping).
Main career routes
Deck (navigation)
Deck officers navigate and manage the ship and its cargo. A common route is a B.Sc. Nautical Science or a Diploma in Nautical Science at an approved institute, followed by sea training and competency exams.
Engine (marine engineering)
Marine engineers run and maintain the ship's machinery. A common route is B.Tech Marine Engineering, or a graduate marine engineering course after a mechanical degree.
Ratings and other roles
Ratings courses (for example, general purpose rating) offer entry after Class 10 or 12. Catering and electro-technical roles also exist.

Life at sea: the honest picture
- Long contracts away from family.
- Responsibility early in your career.
- Travel, but often limited time ashore.
- Strict safety culture and hierarchy.
It suits people who are disciplined, resilient and comfortable with long periods away. Talk to serving officers before deciding.
